It's pre-Oscar season and free movie screenings are happening every freakin' day (you just need to know where to look). So since I heard a cast/crew screening for Rob Marshall's 'Nine' was happening last night--I was all for it!
I drove up to West Hollywood, geared up in my best yeah it looks like I woke up in this but it's fashionable clothes and lined up amongst the geeky, fedora wearing, Starbucks drinking movie lovers. (And there was another opportunity to prove my utter failure with flirting in the post-college world by the way, but I digress.)
Sadly, since it was a mixed bag of guild members and regular folk, despite having a ticket, all of us 'regular folk' were left out because apparently, all the rich, snotty guild people decided to come to that same screening. Yup the guild members braved the rain (trust me, it's a big deal for most Angelinos) and took their Gucci wearing butts into that theatre.
I did, however, get to meet an amazing older woman who could immediately spot my invisible 'movie-buff' badge. We talked about the recent films receiving Oscar buzz and even gushed over Jake Gyllenhall's sexy, sexy self. This chat inevitably led me to watch Jim Sheridan's 'Brothers' as a back-up; something I had meant to do for some time now.In short (and without spoilers), it's a story about family dynamics (including the evolution and disintegration of the familial structure), war, and mental illness. I would highly recommend it, if for nothing else, for the brilliant acting by Natalie Portman, Jake Gyllenhall, Toby Maguire, and Sam Shepard (who also happens to write about family dynamics, seriously. Check him out)! Heck, the two women next to me were so engrossed in the film that I'm sure everyone in that theatre could hear them cry and sigh during the really emotional moments.
And come on. Aren't you excited to finally see a casting agent who worked through something some of us were always thinking: Wow Jake and Toby could be brothers!
